When you read the lead story, ‘Chiang Mai’s City Pillar Ceremony’ or Piti Sao Inthakhin, you get the picture of what the locals are doing and what lies under their actions. Youngsters have been taught by their grandparents to give flowers, candles and incense sticks in an act of respect to the Sao Inthakhin that the King of the Gods, Indra, gave us some time back. Giant titans brought the pillar and located it in a temple at the center of the city. Locals believe if we put some flowers in the trays provided, it will stimulate nature’s fertility, bringing us and the city prosperity and happiness. Here are some of the kinds of flowers used as a ceremonial donation, and if you can pick or buy some and bring them to Wat Chedi Luang, you can join the many others in placing them in the appropriate trays, paying your respects and making your wish for the year ahead. And who knows? Maybe your wish will be realised, and both you and the city will get the prosperity and fertility we all desire.
